Larry Mahan became a professional rodeo cowboy in 1963. He won two bull riding championships in 1965 and 1967. In 1966, he won the first of five consecutive World Champion All-Around Cowboy titles, competing in bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback events. He won an unprecedented sixth All Around title in 1973, a record that stood for 25 years and earned him an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.

In July 1984, Milano Hat Company entered into a licensing agreement with Larry Mahan to market Cowboy hats as the Larry Mahan's Hat Collection with the Milano Hat Company trademark. All Milano hats have gained recognition in the marketplace because of their superior fit and finish, exclusive bodies and weave patterns, special finishes, and trimmings. Milano fur felt hats, which reentered the market in 1992, have earned great popularity again, because of their superior fit and finish.

Since his retirement from rodeo in 1977, Larry Mahan has remained active in the western business through his association with Milano Hat Company, his Texas Longhorn and quarter horse operations, as well as the horsemanship clinics he conducts around the country and at his ranches in Texas and Colorado. Larry is devoted to helping people understand and communicate with horses.

Stran Smith wears the Larry Mahan's Cowboy hat line of Milano felt and straw hats. Stran grew up and still lives in Tell, Texas. He did not start his calf roping career until he was 17 years old, and in that short time has made quite a name for himself. Stran was the 1997 Texas Circuit Calf Roping and All Around Champion Cowboy. In 1998, he was voted the Original Coors Fan's Favorite Cowboy and was the Copenhagen Skoal Year End Series Champion. Stran has qualified for the NFR 8 times.

They have appeared with the likes of Garth Brooks, George Strait, Alabama, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and served as a back up band for Pam Tillis, Deanna Carter, Bryan White, Neal McCoy and other well known artists.
